Can I give my baby juice?

Fruit juice is a good way to take in the daily suggested requirements of fruit servings for adults. But, babies have different requirements during the first few months after birth. For the first six months, babies should be given breast milk or formula only.

Question: Can I give my baby juice?

Answer: Yes, only for babies 6 – 8 months and older in small amounts.

After 6+ months, a baby can drink small amounts of diluted juice between feeds of breast milk / formula.

Use juice that is 100% fruit and has no added sugar.

Offer juice only after standard mealtime so that the baby doesn’t fill up on juice.

Use the sippy cup instead of water bottle; juice in a bottle can cause tooth decay.

Limit juice intake to about 4 oz per day.

Watch your baby for diarrhea from drinking juice and adjust accordingly.

Juice Brands: Tropicana, Minute Maid, Mott’s, Tree Top.
